When Should I Replace My Mattress?

Manufacturers and medical professionals advise that you replace your mattress every 8 to 10 years, depending on how it is cared for. Our personal experience in seeing so many mattresses and beds sold across Northern Ireland is that you should get a new mattress if it is giving you neck and back pain.

You may need to replace your mattress sooner if it is of low quality or if you do not properly care for it, so going with a company like us is the best idea.

Alternatively, if you wake up with a stuffy or running nose, itchy eyes, or skin, your mattress may have gathered dust mite faeces or dead skin cells, which are causing allergens.

It is suggested that you replace your mattress every 8 years or perhaps sooner for health and hygienic reasons.

If you are moving around  in the night, tossing and turning and find that there are bothersome hollows or lumps, this would suggest that your mattress has reached the end of its useful life. Alternatively, if you wake up with a sore back or joints, it’s time to shop for a new mattress.

Softer padding to support your joints and pressure areas is also recommended as your body matures. Of course, this does not imply a droopy or soft mattress! The padding refers to the top layer of your mattress; the intrinsic structure must support your skeletal system – more suited to the high density foam overlay on the pocket sprung mattresses.

How Do I Properly Care For My Mattress?

With proper care, all mattresses will last longer. There are a few simple things you can do to extend the life of your mattress:

  • Do not bend or set furniture on top of a mattress when transferring it.
  • Depending on the type of mattress you have, use a properly supported ensemble foundation – we supply beds Belfast wide and our Divan beds are the perfect accompaniment to your new mattress.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s directions if you don’t want to flip your mattress.
  • Protect your mattress with a mattress protector.

Keep your bedding clean, dry, and free of stains, odours, and dampness. Moisture breaks down the fabrics, ticking, and foam in wet mattresses, therefore dry mattresses endure longer. Moisture promotes the growth of bacteria, fungus, and, in certain cases, parasites. Make sure you don’t use any chemicals or liquids to clean your mattress.

To keep your mattress fresh, don’t put wet towels or wet clothing on the bed’s surface. If the bedding or mattress materials become wet due to a spill, wipe the area quickly and leave the mattress exposed to dry for several hours.

If you choose and care for your mattress properly, it should last a long time and provide you with a good night’s sleep every night.
